The Raconteurs Help Me Stranger Tour 2019

This year I have teamed up with Luz Studio of Montreal once again to bring their production design to life for the North American run of The Raconteur’s Help Me Stranger Tour.  Although this is a band of equal members, as opposed to Jack White’s solo tour from last year, we still have some of the signature Jack White elements such as no set list and a limited color palette- this time copper (orangey amber) and green.

Jack White Boarding House Reach Tour 2018

I had a wonderful time collaborating with the Design team from Luz Studio of Montreal on this project – we had 3 rotating video walls that had video on one side and lights on the other, and we could move them individually to create a variety of looks. Jack White famously doesn’t use a set list and changes how the songs are played from night to night, so I was busking off of the loose cue stacks we had made for the most commonly played songs, and making it up when he played others. During the show I would talk to my Video Director (Rob McShane) about how we were going to approach each song based on where in the set it fell, and what we had already done. In addition I was calling the wall positions and spots at the same time, whew!
Our color palette was limited to shades of blue with accents of white, which was a fun challenge as we couldn’t rely on color combination changes to keep the show dynamic. We had a lot of fun riffing and trying new things each night!

The first minute of this one is cool, then the video gets super bright again

The New Basement Tapes at the Montalban Theater

A few days ago I was lucky enough to be home and to get the call for this very special, potentially one-time-only gig. The New Basement Tapes are a supergroup comprised of Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, Jim James, Taylor Goldsmith, and Rhiannon Giddens (and featuring HAIM and Johnny Depp), playing songs they wrote to previously unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan. The gig was a last minute whim of the band members who were in town doing promo for their album, “Lost on the River,” and was put together in less than 48 hours, complete with a 6 camera film crew. All conventional lighting, warm and with a slightly retro feel. It was a pleasure to work with this team, who pulled this all off in a small amount of time with flying colors.
